Shrewchew
Group Project, Level Design, Lead Programmer
ShrewChew was a two week group project in which I was the lead programmer and level designer. A couch co-op game where players play as a shrew and attempt to collect more pink donuts than their opponent before time runs out. This was the first project I had built with split screen or a third person camera. Playtesters enjoyed the janky physics so we leaned into that angle by keeping characters rotation unlocked and keeping the gravity floaty making the handling of the character feel chaotic and whimsical.

A shrew is a miserable creature with a voracious appetite needing to eat at minimum half its bodyweight a day. This gave birth to the idea of foraging for food as a shrew and using it’s poop as a means of displaying score. This lighthearted goofy game concept was initially imagined as being a 2d platformer but quickly shifted to a local multiplayer 3d sandbox game.
Looking to create multiple forest microbiomes I divided the level into four core quadrants separated by logs in the cardinal directions. These logs are teleporters allowing the player to exit from the log on the opposite side. The center tree has a stairwell around it giving the player access to its upper branches which houses many donuts.
